Boats sailed at PPYC

A wide variety of yachts catered for…

The fleet of yachts sailed at our Club is very diverse, however, there are a number of designs that feature in our fleet and these are described below.

The Club fleet is divided into divisions to allow fair competition between boats of similar performance, but we welcome any yacht owner and their craft - to put it simply, we don’t mind what you sail, as long as you enjoy sailing!

We can offer new members advice on the right yacht to purchase for you and your family, and if need be, we can help with pre-purchase inspections.

Sigrid 6 Trailer Yacht

The Sigrid 6 is a 6.3 metre plywood trailer yacht. Designed by a past Club member, Don Nixon, with the original boat being launched in 1975. The Sigrid utilises the rig and sails from the international Flying Dutchman class with the genoa cut down to a more manageable jib. Sigrids are suited to the flat conditions on the Estuary and are typically sailed with a skipper and one or two crew and provide very exhilarating sailing in strong winds.

The Club is the home of this class in New Zealand with several Sigrids owned by Club members.

The Club has a Sigrid as part of its Learn to Sail fleet, so those new to sailing can work as a team racing a bigger yacht.

Hartley 16 Trailer Yacht

The Hartley 16 is the original trailer yacht with many thousands being built since the design was first published in 1965. The H16 is a plywood boat and well suited to our sheltered conditions on the Estuary. The skipper and a single crew are all that is needed to sail the H16 safely and competitively.

Farr 5000 Trailer Yacht

The Farr 5000 is the smallest of the Bruce Farr designed, fiberglass trailer yachts. These boats provide their owners with considerable accommodation and the even performance of these one-design boats means that their owners enjoy very close racing. Only 40 of these boats were manufactured. In the past, we have had several sailing at the Club.

Paper Tiger catamaran

The Paper Tiger is a 14-foot yacht, designed by Ron Given in the 1967 and it remains a popular class to this day, sailed throughout New Zealand and overseas. Built in either plywood or fiberglass, these boats provide their owners with considerable excitement in a fresh breeze. There are currently several sailing at the Club.

6 Hobie cat-1093 sml.jpg

Hobie catamaran

The Hobie catamaran is an international class, seen worldwide. Built of fiberglass and with no centre-boards, these boats are ideally suited to sailing on the Estuary. The Club has both the 14 and 16 in our fleet. The Hobie 14 can be sailed by one crew, while the Hobie 16 is usually sailed by a crew of two.

6 Weta trimaran.jpg

Weta trimaran

The Weta trimaran is a New Zealand design that has taken off internationally with over 1300 now sold. They have composite foam sandwich hulls with carbon spars and beams, they carry three sails and can be sailed by one person or by a crew of two and are a great yacht for a family.

The Weta comes apart for easy storage and transport. Our Club Wetas sail in our multihull fleet.

5 Zephyr.jpg

Europe, Laser and Zephyr single handed dinghies

Senior Club members sail these single-handed sailing dinghies, and all can be sailed by all genders.

The Europe Dinghy is ideally suited to the average sailor who wants performance without the physical demands of the larger Laser.

The Laser is a more physical boat, it is faster than the Europe and is more demanding on the sailor, while the Zephyr (pictured) competes more with the Europe on performance.

2 Firebug 1098.jpg

Firebug single handed dinghy

The single-handed 2.4 metre Firebug is a New Zealand design with many hundreds built nationally and even more across the globe. The Firebug is built of plywood and usually home built. It is promoted as a family fun boat that can be sailed by people of all ages… and from beginners through to experienced sailors. It is a simple easily managed boat that once mastered, offers exciting racing.

Our Club fleet is the result of several winter building programs. The Club has a number of Firebugs available for daily hire to Club members for a small fee.

4 Sunbursts.jpg

Sunburst two person sailing dinghy

The Sunburst is a very popular two-person open sailing dinghy. With a set of three sails including a spinnaker the Sunburst fills a very important role as a two-person boat for younger sailors moving up from one-person boats or for parent/child combinations.

The Sunburst is just as popular with adult and intermediate crews.

The Club has several Sunbursts for Club members to sail while learning to work as a crew in a double-handed yacht. A small daily hire fee applies to this yacht.

TOPAZ UNO PLUS single or double handed dinghy

In late 2021 the Club took delivery of two Topaz Uno Plus yachts for our Learn to Sail Programme.
These are an English design and like our smaller Sail Qubes they are made using a modern plastic so they are virtually indestructible and they feature moulded in buoyancy tanks and is self-draining.

They can be sailed with just a mainsail or with the addition of a jib. Their versatility goes even further as they can be sailed solo or with a crew of two.

They are easy to handle and very robust and offer fun sailing for children and adults alike, either sail training or racing.

The Club’s Topaz yachts are available for our new Learn to Sail members to use free of charge for their first season.

Fun Fish and Sea Bird sailing dinghies

Several members of our Club own either a Fun Fish or a Sea Bird sailing dinghy.

The two designs are very similar and both offer a simple un-stayed rig and a single sail, making them an easy, uncomplicated yacht to rig up and sail.

They were designed as a dual purpose boat, to be sailed, rowed or fitted with a small out board.

Our owners enjoy racing them competitively in our Open C division.

SailQube single handed dinghy

The SailQube is a development of the international Optimist. It is an ideal training boat for young sailors because it is indestructible and unsinkable. As many of the SailQubes parts are similar to the Optimist, it the perfect race trainer for the international Optimist Class.

It is made from rotationally moulded plastic and it features moulded in buoyancy tanks and is self-draining.

In October 2021, the Club took delivery of six of these yachts to add to our Learn to Sail fleet and they have very quickly proven to be an ideal boat for this.

The Club’s SailQubes are available for new Learn to Sail members to use free of charge for their first season.

1 Optimist (Sam leads Noah) 53.jpg

Optimist single handed dinghy

The Optimist is the most popular training boat for new junior sailors worldwide. The Optimist is an open boat with a modest single mainsail, ideally suited to learners and junior sailors.

The Club has a small fleet of Optimists for new junior members to use for a season (free of charge) before getting their own boat.

Other Classes

Many other classes are represented at the Club including, Starling, Junior Cherub, Young 3.5 and Shell Back classics.

We welcome any class of yacht and encourage owners of classic yachts such as Idle Along and Frostply dinghies to sail in our mixed fleet racing.
