Our Sailing Area

Our home sailing waters are the Northern reaches of the Christchurch Avon/Heathcote Estuary.

As the Estuary is tidal, our sailing programme is structured around the high tide (as recorded at Lyttelton) and we can have up to three hours of sailing on a big tide.

The bay directly in front of the Club is at the mouth of the Avon River and it is widely acknowledged as the best sailing waters on the Estuary and the sheltered waters close to the Club’s launching ramps make the area excellent for those learning to sail.

The predominant wind conditions are North or Nor-Easter, but we occasionally get a Sou-Easter and less frequently, a Nor-Wester.

With the Estuary being an enclosed body of water, the sea conditions are usually flat, although when the breeze gets up, it can build up small to medium waves.
