Learn to Sail - Learn to Race
Learn to Sail for Everyone:
The Club runs a number of Learn to Sail (LTS) programmes to get people sailing anytime during the season and has a variety of LTS boats plus life jackets to suit almost anyone, so the only thing missing is you!
Structured LTS basics skill builder and racing skill builder programmes.
These are typically run concurrently over 6 sessions earlier in the sailing season (September to December).
The course fee covers use of Club LTS boats, life jackets, helmets plus Club membership for the season.
The structured training programmes follow a format developed by Yachting New Zealand and covers basic sailing skills such as:
• Water safety
• Rigging a boat
• Sailing theory
• Launching and retrieving
• Practical sailing and boat handling techniques
• Capsizing
• Basic sailing rules
• Knot tying
For the Beginner Skill Builder course though to:
• Fine tuning your sailing technique
• More gybing and tacking practise
• How to sail a race course
• Learning pre-start and starting sequences
• The meaning of the various signal flags used in running a race
For the Racing Skill Builder course.
Once completed there is on-going support for further development by joining in with the racing fleets under guidance of existing Club members, or continuing with the everyday LTS support.
Every day LTS support. If the timing is not right to join in the structured Skill Builder Courses, the Club also aims to provide dedicated support every day there is programmed sailing for those new to the sport or those wanting to gain more confidence before joining the racing fleets.
The programme involves some land based tuition followed by the opportunity to get out sailing under the close supervision of a dedicated support boat.
Not sure if sailing will be your thing?
Come along and join in the Everyday LTS program for a few sessions for no commitment at all. If you get bitten by the bug and want to continue, simply join the Club and there is no further cost as the Everyday LTS support is free to members, and includes the use of the Club LTS boats, life jackets and helmets.
You can continue in the Everyday LTS support programme as long as needed to gain the confidence and capability to take on wider sailing experiences.
If you join the Club’s Everyday LTS support programme, then you can also participate in one of the Structured Skill Builder courses (mentioned earlier) for no additional cost.
Every day Racing Experience.
For anyone wanting to gain experience in a multi crew racing environment, this is for you.
Centered around the Club’s Sigrid class sail training trailer sailor, we aim to send this yacht out on most racing days with a coach and a training crew of up to 3 to compete on the Club A division / trailer sailor course. The training crew will have the opportunity to learn skills of sail trim, helming and racing tactics.
Booking a spot is highly recommended as availability is limited but is open to all Club members with no further cost to pay.
